Spartanburg County is a county in the Upstate region of northwestern South Carolina, bordering North Carolina to the north and situated between Greenville County and Cherokee County. Spartanburg, the county seat and largest city, serves as the county’s principal economic, healthcare and educational center, while other municipalities include Greer (partly), Woodruff, Duncan, Inman, Lyman, Wellford, Landrum, Chesnee and Pacolet. The county’s landscape consists of rolling Piedmont hills that rise toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the Broad, Pacolet and Tyger rivers and numerous tributaries draining the region. Interstate 85 forms the county’s primary transportation corridor, linking it with Greenville, Charlotte and Atlanta, while Interstate 26 provides connections to Columbia and western North Carolina. Spartanburg County is a major manufacturing and logistics hub—most notably home to BMW Manufacturing’s largest global production plant—alongside healthcare, higher education and distribution industries. The county covers approximately 807 square miles of land and had 327,997 residents at the 2020 census, making it one of South Carolina’s most populous counties.
