Spartanburg is a city and the county seat of Spartanburg County in northwestern South Carolina, forming one of the principal urban centers of the state’s Upstate region. It lies in the Piedmont between the Blue Ridge Mountains and South Carolina’s central interior, roughly 30 miles east of Greenville and about 75 miles southwest of Charlotte. The city developed as a textile-manufacturing and railroad center and is still widely associated with its historic role as the “Hub City,” while its modern economy includes manufacturing, healthcare, higher education, logistics and professional services. Downtown Spartanburg is centered around Morgan Square and is surrounded by established residential neighborhoods, college campuses and former industrial districts undergoing redevelopment. The city had 38,732 residents at the 2020 census, and the Census Bureau estimated its population at 39,978 in 2025.
