Nacogdoches County is a county in East Texas, situated within the forested Piney Woods between the Angelina River on the west and south and Attoyac Bayou on the east. The city of Nacogdoches is the county seat and principal population, education and commercial center, while other communities include Garrison, Cushing, Appleby, Chireno and portions of several smaller settlements. Much of the county consists of rolling, wooded terrain, agricultural land, creeks and reservoirs, with timber production, poultry, cattle, education and healthcare contributing to the local economy. U.S. highways 59 and 259 provide the main north-south transportation routes, and the county is closely associated with Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Nacogdoches County covers about 946.3 square miles of land and had 64,653 residents at the 2020 census.
