Milwaukee County occupies a compact stretch of southeastern Wisconsin along Lake Michigan, with Milwaukee as its county seat and largest city. Its 19 municipalities range from dense lakefront neighborhoods to inner-ring suburbs, while the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers link much of the county to the lake. Established in 1835, the county grew rapidly through Great Lakes trade, immigration, brewing and manufacturing. Milwaukee County had about 924,200 residents in 2025. Its economy centers on health care, manufacturing, education, finance, logistics, food production, tourism and cultural institutions serving the wider metropolitan region.
