Location overview
Milwaukee stands on the western shore of Lake Michigan at the meeting of the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers. Wisconsin’s largest city is known for its lakefront, distinctive neighborhoods, brewing heritage and strong traditions of immigrant culture and industry. Milwaukee was incorporated in 1846 after three rival settlements joined, and its harbor helped turn the city into a major Great Lakes manufacturing and trading center. The city had about 562,400 residents in 2025. Manufacturing, health care, education, finance, food and beverage production, logistics, tourism and the arts all contribute to its modern economy.
