Location overview

Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas and the seat of Pulaski County in the central part of the state. It stands on the south bank of the Arkansas River and takes its name from a rock outcrop used as a landmark by early travelers. The territorial capital moved to Little Rock in 1821, and the city remained the capital when Arkansas became a state in 1836. Chartered as a town in 1831 and as a city in 1835, it developed through river commerce and later railroad connections. Its historic downtown reflects its long role as a center of state government, trade and cultural life.
