State

Location overview

Arkansas is a Southern state stretching from the Ozark and Ouachita mountains to the forests and lowlands of the Mississippi River valley. Little Rock is the capital and largest city, and the Arkansas River crosses the state from west to east. Indigenous history, frontier settlement, cotton agriculture and river commerce all shaped its development before and after statehood in 1836. Hot Springs, the Buffalo National River and extensive public lands reflect its strong outdoor identity. Agriculture, food production, retail, logistics, manufacturing and tourism contribute to the modern economy.
