Pittsburg is a city in Contra Costa County, California, where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers meet at the eastern end of the San Francisco Bay Area. Its waterfront developed from a settlement known as New York Landing, with fishing, canning and coal shipping shaping its early growth. The community incorporated as Black Diamond in 1903. A popular vote changed its name to Pittsburg on Feb. 11, 1911. Camp Stoneman, established during World War II, later became part of the city’s development after the military installation closed.
