Location overview
California is a state on the Pacific coast of the western United States, bordering Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. Sacramento is its capital, and Los Angeles is its largest city. The Central Valley lies between the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada, while forests cover much of the northern interior and deserts occupy parts of the southeast. The Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers drain the valley through a shared delta toward San Francisco Bay. California became the 31st state in 1850 during the Gold Rush.
