San Bernardino County spans a vast portion of Southern California from the eastern edge of the Los Angeles Basin to the Nevada and Arizona borders. San Bernardino is the county seat, while Ontario, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Victorville and numerous desert communities form several distinct population centers. The county contains the San Bernardino Mountains, broad Mojave Desert valleys, the Colorado River and some of the largest protected landscapes in the contiguous United States. It was created in 1853 during the early years of California statehood. Logistics, manufacturing, health care, tourism, mining and military activity reflect the county’s scale and geographic variety.
