Rancho Murieta is an unincorporated, census-designated community in southeastern Sacramento County, California, located along State Route 16 about 25 miles east of downtown Sacramento near the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The community occupies a largely rural landscape of rolling grasslands, oak woodland and tributaries of the Cosumnes River, while its developed areas include gated residential neighborhoods, golf courses, an equestrian center, commercial property and a small public-use airport. Rancho Murieta is not an incorporated city and is governed primarily through Sacramento County, with local utility and community services provided by the Rancho Murieta Community Services District. The census-designated place covers approximately 12.1 square miles and had 5,903 residents at the 2020 census. State Route 16, locally known as Jackson Road, provides the principal connection west toward Sacramento and east toward Amador County and the Sierra foothills.
