Sacramento County occupies roughly 994 square miles in north-central California, extending eastward from the low-lying Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta and Sacramento River floodplain across the broad Sacramento Valley to the rolling foothills at the western edge of the Sierra Nevada. The county seat and largest city is Sacramento, which is also California’s capital and lies near the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers. Its geography ranges from densely urbanized communities around Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove to agricultural land, river corridors, wetlands and smaller Delta communities such as Isleton. The county contains seven incorporated cities, while a substantial share of its population lives in unincorporated communities administered directly by the county. Major waterways include the Sacramento, American and Cosumnes rivers, which have shaped the area’s settlement, agriculture, transportation and continuing flood-management needs. Sacramento County is one of California’s original counties, established in 1850, and serves as the core of the larger Sacramento metropolitan region.
