The California Department of Transportation, known as Caltrans, is the state agency responsible for California’s highway system and several other transportation programs. It designs, builds, operates and maintains highways and freeways, with field work organized through 12 geographic districts. Caltrans also supports intercity rail service, transportation planning, mass transportation and aeronautics programs, including permits for public-use airports and certain heliports. Its district offices work with local and regional agencies on projects that connect communities and move freight. Statewide administration coordinates engineering, equipment, project delivery and maintenance across a network of more than 50,000 highway and freeway lane miles.
