Los Angeles is the largest city in California, the county seat of Los Angeles County and the principal city of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It lies in a broad coastal basin in Southern California, bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and south and by the Santa Monica, Santa Susana, San Gabriel and Verdugo mountains around much of its inland perimeter. The city has an unusually extensive and irregular municipal boundary that includes the central Los Angeles Basin, the San Fernando Valley and the narrow Harbor Gateway corridor connecting the main body of the city to San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles River and Ballona Creek cross the city, while the surrounding hills, canyons and mountain slopes create marked differences in terrain and development. Los Angeles is a global center for entertainment, international trade, aerospace, technology, manufacturing, higher education, tourism and professional services, supported by the Port of Los Angeles, Los Angeles International Airport and a large freeway and transit network. The city covers 469.49 square miles of land and had 3,898,747 residents at the 2020 census, making it the second-most populous city in the United States.
