Los Angeles County is a county in Southern California extending from the Pacific coast and the offshore islands of Santa Catalina and San Clemente inland across the Los Angeles Basin, the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains, the Antelope Valley and portions of the Mojave Desert. The city of Los Angeles is the county seat and largest municipality, but the county also includes 87 other incorporated cities—including Long Beach, Glendale, Santa Clarita, Pasadena and Torrance—and extensive unincorporated communities governed directly by the county. Its landscape ranges from densely urbanized coastal plains and major ports to beaches, rugged mountain terrain, national forest and high-desert communities around Lancaster and Palmdale. Los Angeles County covers about 4,060 square miles of land and had 10,014,009 residents at the 2020 census, making it the most populous county in the United States. It is bordered by Ventura, Kern, San Bernardino and Orange counties and serves as a major international center for entertainment, trade, manufacturing, education, technology and government.
