California Department of Education

The California Department of Education is the state agency responsible for oversight and support of California’s public education system. Based in Sacramento, it works with county offices of education, school districts and charter schools on instruction, accountability and student services. The department administers statewide assessment programs, including the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress and the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California. Its responsibilities also include education funding, student data, program guidance and assistance to local educational agencies. The department works under the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and supports implementation of state education policy.
