Location overview

San Francisco, California, USA flag

San Francisco is a coastal city in northern California at the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. Its steep hills, dense neighborhoods and waterfront shape the city’s landscape. Maritime commerce and the 1849 gold rush helped drive its early growth around the bay’s natural harbor. The Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge later connected the city by road with communities to the north and east. San Francisco is a regional center of economic activity, technology and cultural life in the Bay Area.
