Montrose

Location overview
Montrose is a city and county seat in southwestern Colorado’s Uncompahgre Valley. Incorporated in 1882, it developed as a supply center for nearby mining communities. The arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad that year helped establish its role in regional transportation and commerce. Agriculture grew in importance as mining declined. The Gunnison Tunnel, opened in 1909, brought irrigation water into the valley and supported its farms.
