Ridgway, Ouray County, Colorado, USA
Municipality
Location overview
Ridgway is a home-rule town along the Uncompahgre River in the foothills of southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The Rio Grande Southern Railroad laid out the town in 1890 as a headquarters and a hub for the surrounding ranching community. It was formally established in 1891 and named for railroad founder Robert M. Ridgway. Rail transport and ranching shaped the town’s early growth. Ridgway Reservoir, completed north of town in 1987, is now part of Ridgway State Park and can be reached from town by the Uncompahgre RiverWay Trail.
