Newark is a city in western New Castle County, Delaware. It developed near the fall line where the Christina and White Clay waterways turn east toward the Delaware River. Early roads linked the settlement with the Chesapeake Bay region and Philadelphia. Water-powered mills, agricultural trade and small industries supported its growth, and it received a royal charter in 1758. The University of Delaware is a major presence in the city.
