Hays, Ellis County, Kansas, USA

Hays is the seat of Ellis County in western Kansas, in the Smoky Hills region. The city developed in the 1860s beside Fort Hays and the advancing railroad, then grew into a commercial and educational center for surrounding farming communities. Fort Hays State University and the preserved fort site reflect two lasting parts of its identity, while health care, retail and regional services support the wider area.
