Lawrence sits along the Kansas River amid the wooded stream valleys and rolling prairie of northeastern Kansas. Its downtown, university hill and surrounding neighborhoods form a regional center between Kansas City and Topeka. Founded in 1854 by antislavery settlers, the city became a focal point of the territorial conflict known as Bleeding Kansas.
