Location overview

Cambridge is a Massachusetts city on the north bank of the Charles River, across from Boston. Colonial settlers called it Newtowne before it took the Cambridge name in 1638. The city developed from several distinct communities, including Old Cambridge, Cambridgeport and East Cambridge. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology anchor major educational and research districts. Squares such as Harvard and Kendall, older neighborhoods and the riverfront give Cambridge a varied urban landscape shaped by scholarship, industry and transportation.
