Haverhill is a city in Essex County in northeastern Massachusetts, along the Merrimack River near the New Hampshire border. The community was established in 1640 in an area known as Pentucket. It became a city in 1870 and developed a substantial shoe-manufacturing industry. Its landscape combines an older urban and industrial center with outlying residential and rural areas.
