Gaithersburg is an incorporated city in central Montgomery County, Maryland, approximately 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and forms part of the Interstate 270 technology corridor within the Washington metropolitan area. The city is bordered by Montgomery Village to the northeast, Washington Grove to the east, Rockville to the southeast and unincorporated communities including North Potomac and Redland on its other sides. Interstate 270 divides Gaithersburg into eastern and western sections, while Maryland Route 355 follows the historic corridor through Olde Towne. The city includes established neighborhoods around its historic railroad center as well as newer planned developments such as Kentlands and Lakelands. Major institutions and employers include the National Institute of Standards and Technology, biotechnology and technology companies, healthcare providers and government contractors. Gaithersburg covers about 10.32 square miles of land and had 69,657 residents at the 2020 census; the city estimated its population at 72,996 in January 2026.
