Location overview

Pontiac is a city in Oakland County in southeastern Michigan and the county seat. The Pontiac Company established the community in 1818 and built a sawmill along the Clinton River the following year. It incorporated as a village in 1837 and became a city in 1861. Carriage manufacturing expanded in the late 19th century, followed by automobile production in the early 20th century. That transition tied the city’s development closely to the growth of General Motors.
