Location overview

University City is an inner-ring suburb in eastern St. Louis County, Missouri, immediately west of the independent city of St. Louis. It is bordered by St. Louis along much of its eastern and southern sides and by municipalities including Clayton, Ladue, Olivette, Overland, Vinita Park, Pagedale and Wellston. Commonly called “U City,” the community developed largely as a streetcar suburb during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and retains substantial historic residential and commercial architecture, particularly around Delmar Boulevard and the Delmar Loop. Its northern areas generally reflect later, automobile-oriented suburban development. Major routes include Interstate 170, Olive Boulevard, Delmar Boulevard and Forest Park Parkway, while MetroLink’s Blue Line serves the city’s southern edge. University City covers about 5.88 square miles of land and had 35,065 residents at the 2020 census.
