Location overview
Winston-Salem is a city and the seat of Forsyth County in North Carolina’s Piedmont region. It formed in 1913 when Winston and Salem consolidated. Salem grew from a Moravian community founded in 1766, while Winston emerged as the new county seat in the 19th century. Tobacco and textile industries helped shape Winston’s growth and the combined city’s industrial development. Old Salem preserves buildings from the earlier town, south of the modern downtown.
