Highland, Ulster County, New York, USA

Highland is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Lloyd, on the west bank of the Hudson River opposite Poughkeepsie. The community rises from the old river landing toward a compact commercial center, with orchards, wooded slopes and Illinois Mountain forming its inland backdrop. Highland Landing once handled river traffic, and the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge opened in 1889 as a major freight crossing before closing after a 1974 fire. Reopened in 2009 as Walkway Over the Hudson, the bridge now links Highland’s rail trail to Poughkeepsie and the broader Empire State Trail. The hamlet combines residential neighborhoods and local businesses with tourism, outdoor recreation and commuting connections across the Mid-Hudson Valley.
