New York is a state in the Northeastern United States, bordered by Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the south, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the east, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec to the north and west. Albany is the state capital, while New York City is its largest city and the center of the nation’s largest metropolitan area; other major population centers include Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse and the Albany–Schenectady–Troy region. The state’s geography ranges from the Atlantic coastline and Long Island through the Hudson and Mohawk river valleys to the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, the Finger Lakes and the shores of lakes Erie and Ontario. New York covers approximately 47,126 square miles of land and had 20,201,249 residents at the 2020 census, making it the fourth-most populous state at that time.
