Monroe County is a county in western New York along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, with Rochester serving as its county seat, largest city and principal economic and cultural center. The county is crossed by the Genesee River and includes a mix of dense urban neighborhoods, older industrial communities, suburban towns, agricultural land and lakeshore areas. It contains 19 towns, 10 villages and the city of Rochester, and forms the core of the Rochester metropolitan area. Major transportation routes include interstates 390, 490 and 590, the New York State Thruway and Greater Rochester International Airport. Monroe County covers about 656.9 square miles of land and had 754,443 residents at the 2020 census.
