Municipality
Location overview
New York City occupies one of the world’s great natural harbors at the mouth of the Hudson River and consists of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Its dense skyline, waterfronts, parks and hundreds of distinct neighborhoods make it the largest and most internationally connected city in the United States. The modern city took shape when the five boroughs consolidated in 1898, building on centuries of Lenape history, Dutch and British settlement and successive waves of immigration. New York City had about 8.6 million residents in 2025. Finance, media, technology, health care, education, tourism, fashion, the arts, trade and professional services underpin its global economy.
