Location overview

Oneonta is a city in Otsego County, New York, in the Susquehanna River valley. Hills rise on both sides of the valley, giving the community its nickname, the City of the Hills. The arrival of the Albany & Susquehanna Railroad in 1865 and the later construction of Delaware & Hudson railroad shops helped shape its growth. Historic commercial buildings and residential neighborhoods preserve much of the city’s development from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hartwick College and the State University of New York at Oneonta give the city a substantial college presence.
