Location overview
Saugerties is a town in northeastern Ulster County, bordered by the Hudson River and extending west toward the foothills of the Catskill Mountains; the incorporated village of Saugerties lies within it. Esopus Creek flows through the town to the Hudson, creating falls and a sheltered waterfront that supported mills, docks and later recreation. Dutch settlement began in the 17th century, Palatine German families arrived in 1710, and later industries included ironworking, papermaking, bluestone quarrying, brickmaking and river-ice harvesting. The town had about 19,400 residents in 2025. Its modern character combines a historic village center, arts and music, farming, small manufacturing, Hudson River and Esopus recreation, and tourism tied to the Catskills.
