Location overview

Hamilton is a city and the seat of Butler County, Ohio, on the Great Miami River between Cincinnati and Dayton. It developed from Fort Hamilton, established in 1791 and named for Alexander Hamilton, and incorporated in 1810. A hydraulic canal system completed in 1845 helped power factories and expand its manufacturing economy. Rossville, on the river’s west bank, merged with Hamilton in 1854 and remains a historic neighborhood. Paper mills, machine-tool production and other industries shaped the city, while public sculpture and riverfront parks are prominent features of its contemporary landscape.
