York is a city in south-central Pennsylvania and the seat of York County, west of the Susquehanna River. A compact downtown and surrounding rowhouse neighborhoods developed within a landscape of productive farmland and industrial towns. Founded in the 18th century, York briefly hosted the Continental Congress and later became known for metalworking, machinery and other manufacturing. Markets, historic architecture and cultural institutions reflect its long regional role. Manufacturing, health care, education, food production and local commerce remain important to the city.
