Arroyo is a community in Puerto Rico, set within Puerto Rico’s tropical coastal plains, limestone hills and mountainous interior. Arroyo lies on Puerto Rico’s southern coast, where a nineteenth-century port served the surrounding sugar country. Local settlement followed the broader regional pattern: Taíno heritage, Spanish colonial rule, plantation agriculture and migration shaped the island, followed by expanding road connections.
