Puerto Rico is a United States territory in the northeastern Caribbean, centered on the main island east of the Dominican Republic and including Vieques, Culebra and numerous smaller islands. San Juan is its capital and largest metropolitan center, and the territory is divided into 78 municipalities. The Cordillera Central crosses a mountainous interior framed by coastal plains, karst landscapes, tropical forests and beaches. Puerto Rico had an estimated population of 3,184,835 in 2025, about 3.1% below the 2020 estimates base. Its economy is led by manufacturing, especially pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and also includes finance, trade, professional services, tourism and agriculture.
