Location overview
Bay City is an incorporated city and the seat of Matagorda County in coastal Texas, southwest of Houston. It lies on Bay Prairie between the Colorado River and Caney Creek, where state highways 35 and 60 meet. Established in 1894, the community became the county seat that same year and incorporated in 1902. Rice farming and milling helped shape its early growth, followed by rail connections and industrial development. A barge canal connects the area with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
