Decatur is a city in North Texas and the county seat of Wise County, located about 40 miles northwest of Fort Worth at the junction of U.S. Highway 81/287 and U.S. Highway 380. Established in 1856 and named after U.S. Navy Commodore Stephen Decatur, the city has long served as the governmental, commercial and transportation center for Wise County. Decatur is known for its well-preserved historic downtown centered on the Wise County Courthouse, while its economy is supported by agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, education and businesses serving the rapidly growing Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Although it retains its small-town character, Decatur has experienced significant residential and commercial growth due to its proximity to the Metroplex and major transportation corridors.
