Municipality

Location overview

Mauston is a small city on the Lemonweir River and the county seat of Juneau County in central Wisconsin. Castle Rock and Petenwell lakes lie nearby, and the city serves travelers along Interstate 90/94 between Madison and the Twin Cities. Originally called Maughs Town for founder Milton Maugh, Mauston grew around the lumber industry and was incorporated in 1887. The city counted 4,347 residents in the 2020 census. Retail, health care, manufacturing and services for surrounding farms and recreation areas give Mauston a role larger than its population suggests.
