Huntington is a river city in western West Virginia, set along the Ohio River near the Kentucky and Ohio borders. The broad floodplain rises quickly into wooded Appalachian hills, giving the city a compact linear form. Founded as the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the 1870s, Huntington grew through rail transportation, manufacturing and river trade.
