Hawaii is a Pacific Ocean archipelago with eight major islands and numerous smaller islets. The major islands are Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe. Honolulu, on Oahu, is the state capital and principal port. Hawaii became the 50th state on Aug. 21, 1959.
