Kenaitze Alaska Native Village Statistical Area, Alaska

The Kenaitze Alaska Native Village Statistical Area is a census-defined geography on the western Kenai Peninsula associated with the Kenaitze Indian Tribe and the Dena’ina community centered around Kenai. It is not an incorporated town or a reservation, and its boundaries are used to organize statistical information about an Alaska Native village population. The area encompasses an extensive landscape around the lower Kenai River and Cook Inlet, where salmon runs, wetlands, forests and coastal waters have sustained Dena’ina life for generations. Kenaitze history and identity remain closely tied to the river, traditional subsistence practices and the Dena’ina language. Fishing, tourism, energy development and the regional economy of Kenai and Soldotna shape the broader area today.
