City of Mitchell

The City of Mitchell is the municipal government for Mitchell, the county seat of Davison County in southeastern South Dakota. The community was platted in 1879 as the railroad advanced across the region and became a chartered city in 1882. Mitchell uses a mayor-and-council form of government, with an administrator and municipal departments handling daily operations. City services include police, fire protection, streets, water and wastewater utilities, parks, recreation, planning and a public library. The government also maintains the Corn Palace, a civic auditorium and landmark that has drawn visitors to Mitchell since the late 19th century.
