Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota, USA

Mitchell is a city in southeastern South Dakota and the county seat of Davison County, located about 70 miles west of Sioux Falls. The community was founded in 1879 along the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway and was named for Alexander Mitchell, a railroad executive and financier. Mitchell developed as a regional center for agriculture, commerce and education and is home to Dakota Wesleyan University and the Corn Palace, a civic auditorium known for its annually redesigned crop-art murals. The city serves surrounding rural communities with health care, retail, manufacturing and government services. Mitchell had a population of about 15,700 in the 2020 census.
