City of Tallahassee

The City of Tallahassee is the municipal government for Florida’s capital and the county seat of Leon County. It provides public safety, utilities, transportation, parks, planning and other local services for a city that anchors the state’s Big Bend region. Tallahassee is home to Florida’s principal state-government institutions as well as Florida State University and Florida A&M University. The city was selected as the territorial capital in 1824 because it lay between the population centers of St. Augustine and Pensacola. Government, higher education, health care and regional commerce remain central to its civic and economic life.
