Town of Milford, New Hampshire

The Town of Milford is the municipal government serving Milford, a community in southern New Hampshire’s Hillsborough County along the Souhegan River. Milford was separated from Amherst and incorporated as an independent town in 1794, taking its name from a shallow “mill ford” near the water-powered mills that operated along the river during the 18th century. The town later became known for its granite industry, earning the nickname “the Granite Town in the Granite State,” and was also a stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, the town government provides public safety, public works, planning, recreation, water, tax, administrative and other municipal services from its historic center around Union Square.
