Hacienda La Puente Unified School District

Ransomware disrupted Hacienda La Puente district systems in April 2024, delaying testing and affecting technology-based instruction. Later notices described possible file access and a review completed in July 2025.
Malware that encrypts systems or data, typically accompanied by a ransom demand.
An unauthorized party accessed or viewed data without evidence that the data was copied, removed, altered, or publicly disclosed.

Internal or external network connectivity was unavailable or materially impaired.
Internal business, administrative, operational, or staff-facing systems were unavailable.

Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in California discovered a ransomware attack April 12, 2024. The district brought in forensic specialists to secure its network and restore systems.
The district’s April 28, 2025, notice identifies unauthorized system access from Feb. 9 through April 12, 2024. That access window establishes the earliest known compromise, rather than two months of continuous service interruption. The notice also says the district reported the incident to federal law enforcement and the California Cybersecurity Integration Center.
An Aug. 15 notice says the review of potentially affected files was completed July 31, 2025. It describes possible unauthorized file access and potential exposure of personal information. The templates leave recipient-specific information categories blank, so they do not establish the complete set of affected data or people.
District Advisory Committee minutes for April 16, 2024 document effects on instruction and assessment. A Cedarlane representative reported that testing had been rescheduled because of network interruptions and that students were working on curriculum projects. Another representative raised concern about disrupted learning and the need for teaching methods that did not depend on technology.
In his update posted May 9, Superintendent Alfonso Jiménez thanked the community for its flexibility during network recovery and said staff kept learning underway amid state-testing preparation. He described work to improve backup methods and response planning. The update does not identify when every affected system returned to service. School closures mentioned elsewhere in the advisory minutes concern reconfiguration and are not established as consequences of this attack.
The district explicitly confirms ransomware, supporting high confidence in the incident’s cyber cause. Possible file access is not proof of exfiltration, public release or fraudulent use. The notices say the district had no evidence of attempted or actual misuse. The primary sources do not establish a responsible group, entry method, ransom demand or payment.
The full application and user impact, precise restoration timeline, affected population and individual data categories remain unresolved. The historical incident remains presumed resolved, with no verified end date. April 16 is the latest specific dated instructional effect documented by the minutes; the later general recovery update does not identify a continuing application outage. The 2025 review and notification dates do not extend the operational disruption into 2025.

The district identifies its administrative address as 15959 E. Gale Ave. in the City of Industry in its breach notice.
The school district’s own NCES 2023–24 service-area polygon. This overlay models its educational remit; it does not assert identical disruption at every school.
