Fremont County, Colorado, USA

Location overview

Fremont County lies in south-central Colorado, with Cañon City as its county seat. The Arkansas River crosses the county through a landscape that ranges from eastern plains to high mountain terrain. The river’s Royal Gorge is one of the area’s defining natural features. Established in 1861, Fremont was one of the original 17 counties of Colorado Territory and was named for explorer John C. Frémont. Ranching, orchards, coal and oil extraction, railroads and correctional facilities have all shaped its development.
